In a career entering its fifth decade Dave Newton has topped the annual British Jazz Awards’ ‘Best Pianist’ poll on no fewer than sixteen occasions. A Leeds College of Music graduate, Dave has been accompanist of choice for many singers including Carol Kidd, Stacey Kent, Claire Martin, Tina May, Marion Montgomery and Annie Ross. He has shared a concert platform with countless top class instrumentalists (including college roommate Alan Barnes, Martin Taylor and Don Weller) and can be heard on something like one hundred recordings (several as leader).Â
Dean Stockdale is a familiar figure here at the Lit & Phil. Previous appearances include solo piano, trio and quartet performances. Dean’s critically acclaimed ‘Celebrating Oscar’ (Oscar Peterson) project received its premiere in the Loftus Room. The project subsequently toured the British Isles and further afield, including Arthur’s Jazz Club, Belfast and Le Duc des Lombards, Paris. Alan Barnes, Alex Clarke and Ben Crosland are frequent collaborators, performing nationwide at jazz clubs and festivals.Â
